Does Oily Skin Need Moisturiser?

It’s a common misperception that oily or acneic skin shouldn’t be moisturised, but the truth is that all skins need hydration to ensure barrier function is maintained. A strong barrier protects skin from bacteria and other potential contaminants getting in, which can lead to redness and irritation; this is why acne skins can commonly be quite red and flaky. Skins suffering from congestion and breakouts are also very low in EFAs (essential fatty acids), which contributes to the poor barrier function and causes the thickening of oil in the skin.

EFAs are essential for increasing hydration and reducing inflammation internally. Happily, we are able to correct weak barriers and help to rebuild their strength – and beautiful skin. The key is finding the right skin moisturiser; one that is lightweight and hydrating. EFA or Essential Fatty Acid supplements are also essential (sorry not sorry about the pun!) to ensure the oil is viscous, so it can freely move up onto the surface of the skin rather than lingering in its thick and cheesy form (I know – eeew), which leads to further clogging in the hair shafts. Both options will restore hydration, reduce inflammation and encourages skin healing… all while helping to rebalance oily, congested skin. Our top picks?
